Hi everyone,

I am from Bukit Panjang Governemnt High school. Our school like all others do provide many learning trips for its students and even serve as a leadership platform for us.Lets take an example,we[the student council] are currently embarking on a project, known as the SUNday walkathon with Dover Park Hospice,by which we have to help them raise not only funds but also to increase awareness of palative care.

Our school also have a Social learning club, where members help to organise community involvment programmes, such as bringing the old folks to places of interest like the zoo, newspaper collection and many others.

overall, these clubs/programmes provided by the school do greatly enriched us,and I am sure that it have more or less an good impact on our community.

Dana, what kind of fund-raising services did you do? How did they work?

Our school AIS has been organizing school trips to other countries such as China, India, and Thailand where students spent a day or two helping students from rural and low-income families to learn English through lessons and interactive activities. In Hong Kong, we have student-led community service projects where students volunteer to help tutor local students from low income families. Part of our workshop in this year's GIN conference will emphasize on the tasks and challenges students from AIS tackled to help make a difference.

Living in a country like Singapore might not qualify for under-developed, but personally i feel that my school UWCSEA does a great job in teaching us students the value of a good education and how it can help break the poverty cycle and empower us to lead a better life. In Grade 6, we are taught about the effects of education on a poverty-stricken family and these values which we learn are then put into place if we take a gap year option and go teach at a school somewhere in our region ( SE Asia). It is really an enriching experience and from the experiences of fellow students and school alumni, you can eventually see the long term effect this has on a community:-)

Have any of you worked with migrant students in China? If so, what sort of programs did you find worked well? How did you access that community?

Our school has been doing several different fund-raising services to support other children with basic education and it's getting into tradition. Not only high school students are having such services but also primary school students are having their own. For this GIN conference our school will have workshop about that fund raising services and a program that all of us can participate for this topic.

This seems to be such a big issue to tackle, but one that probably all of our international school campuses are loaded with resources for.
Our school is planning a few service days in the community this spring specifically focused on this topic (partnering with a variety of other schools who educate students with fewer educational opportunities).
Ideally it seems like something that starts by making initial contact, identifying needs, and grows over time.

Although our project at TCIS is still in its infancy, we have found that one of the most pressing issues for the local community involves education. We may be working towards some sort of project where students from our school would work with members of the community teaching English.

Would love to hear what others schools are doing in this area... we're attempting to address this as a schoolwide project this year.
