About GIN

The Global Issues Network is based on the ideas described by Jean Francois Rischard in his book High Noon “Twenty Global Problems, Twenty Years to Solve Them.” Rischard identifies 20 urgent global problems and encourages the formation of small groups around the world to help solve them. This echoes Margaret Mead’s famous quotation, “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Global Issues Networks have been formed in many international schools throughout the world empowering international school students to help sustainably solve urgent global problems. We, in EARCOS, will continue to take the opportunity to address these urgent problems to create change in Asia and the Pacific.

Inspiration

This site will host all of the online interaction between the participants at the GIN Conference hosted at Chinese International School Hong Kong in March 2010.

We strongly encourage you to join this Ning site if you are attending or interested in the GIN conference. Click Sign up in the upper right of the sidebar.

This site is about networking, discussing (and hopefully solving) global issues, and sharing. Let's focus on making that work. Join the group that is in your area of interest. Start a forum in your group to promote your presentation, ask a question, upload documents or link to websites. This is a way to collaborate and network before the conference.

Know, Care, Act! – GIN March 19th – 21st Conference Structure Update

This years GIN Conference will retain many of the familiar elements of our previous events and will introduce new ways for students to participate and communicate their passion for Global Issues.

How many Students can attend the GIN Conference from one school?
Schools can bring up to 15 students with two accompanying facilitators. This change has been made to enable schools to obtain group air tickets and lower the cost of travelling to the Conference.

The Film is much longer this year.
Each school is to submit a film of up to 3 minutes long before the conference starts. A panel of judges made up of professionals and peers will assess how each film develops the Conference theme of Know, Care, Act! The best films will be shown to the entire conference before and after the Key Note Addresses and all films will be shown during the Conference and at a film festival on the evening of Saturday 20th March.

Will there be team presentations by groups of up to six as there have been in the past?
This year the Global Village Groups activities will replace the team presentations so each school could provide up to 15 different activities.

How will the Global Village Group Work?
Each Global Village Groups will contain ONE delegate from each participating school. The individual school delegate will provide a 6 minute activity for the other members of the Global Village Group. CIS students will lead and support all members of the Global Village Group.

What is the Global Village Group Activity to be about?
The 6 minute activity is to be centred on the Conference theme of Know, Care, Act! The activity should provide knowledge about the selected global issue, communicate passion for the issue and provide participants with opportunities to become more involved in the Global Issue.

How do our Students Present the Activity?
The activity must entice all Global Village Groups participants to Know, Care, Act! These activities should be imaginative, involve all members of the Village Group and be lots of fun! The activity will NOT employ communication technology such as power point or video instead it will promote discussion, involvement, understanding and commitment.

How many Global Village Group meetings will there be over the Conference?
Delegates will meet in their Global Village Group on 5 occasions over the Conference this will provide an occasion for every member of the Group to present their activity and for the Group to bond and create genuine network opportunities.

A Backward Looking Glance at the Global Village Groups Experience.

My school decided to bring 12 students to the GIN Conference. Some of our delegates decided to do the same activity at their Global Village Workshop, however some wanted to do their own actively. So after considerable negotiation we arrived at GIN with 6 delegates who presented the same activity to their individual workshop and 6 who did unique activities.

Our 12 delegates were in 12 different Global Village Groups and each member presented to the other participants of the Global Village Group.
The thought of the activity was a bit scary for some of our delegates but with our fantastic preparation and the support given by the CIS Workshop leaders we were very proud of our achievements.

We remained in the same Village Group throughout the Conference so our delegates really got to know and trust lots of other students from around the Asia- Pacific region. In addition each of our GIN Conferences delegate actively participated in presenting at the Conference and learnt about Global Issues in at least 12 different schools.”
